Great feature in @CelebrateMK this month. New Website #News #MumtoMum

As featured in: celebratemk.co.uk/2018

Sam Poole, whose Mum to Mum MK Facebook group now has 11,500 members, is replacing her well-known Milton Keynes Mums blog with a brand new website called Mum to Mum UK.

970051_10151672969071153_1679810138_n

All of the current content will be migrated over and some exciting new features added.

Sam explained: “The new website has been a huge investment but we have worked really hard on a new weekly calendar facility that is going to be a fantastic tool for new parents in MK.

“Mum to Mum UK will be your ‘what’s on’ personal assistant and we’re looking to expand into surrounding areas too.”

In 2007, Sam set up a Facebook group for 20 of her friends so they could keep in touch, ask advice, and generally feel less isolated.

Slowly friends invited friends and it became the ‘go to’ group for ideas, support, advice, recommendations and raised over £5,000 for charity.

Today, her Mum to Mum MK Facebook group is known by parents all over the city. As it grew, Sam started a sister website, miltonkeynesmums.co.uk, and began blogging to store all the ‘best bits’ and help promote over 100 local businesses.

Now, parents, carers and businesses will be given a boost with the arrival of the new website Mum to Mum UK this month.

Sam added: “I hope the new website will bring this fantastic, supportive and positive community even closer together, offering bags of essential information and helping mums find the answer to whichever question they have to ask.”

Contact Sam on info@relocating2.com if you would like an online presence on the new Mum to Mum UK website.

After a few posts this week about anxiety, depression and with Christmas around the corner, we wanted to share some stories from the Samaritans…

22220046_10155701171630768_6518554569523506396_o

LINDA’S STORY @ www.samaritans.org

Linda called Samaritans for the first time after the death of her husband of 26 years, Brian Hudson.

At the same time, Linda was undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

It was an incredibly difficult time.

HELEN’S STORY @ www.samaritans.org

Helen, 23, from Solihull, West Midlands used Samaritans’ text service in 2012 to help her through problems she was having with her partner.

“I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in them.”

Nowhere else to turn

“I have contacted Samaritans by text a number of times. It was mainly around the time I was having problems with my (now ex) partner.

“I needed someone to talk to, in confidence, without anyone knowing. I was feeling really low, upset, angry and worried about my relationship, and didn’t know where else to turn.

Donations needed to make text service fully available

“I heard about the texting service through a friend. As I have a hearing impairment, phone calls can be very difficult for me and I am more at ease when texting people, so it was a great option for me.

“Samaritans helped me by listening (well reading!) to what I said and responding by asking questions and offering support.

“My experience of using the text service was good, even though there were times when I had to wait a while for a response. The text service is still being rolled out to its branches, and Samaritans are currently fundraising to allow more volunteers to deliver this kind of support to people like me.

Calmer and ready to make my own decisions

“I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in them.

“I think my life would be quite different if I hadn’t sought help from Samaritans.

“I still experience problems with depression and anxiety, but I am much better than I was when I first contacted Samaritans.

“The Samaritans’ text service is fantastic, particularly for people like me who have problems with anxiety as you don’t have to speak. I have recommended it to a few of my friends.”

If you want to help us be there to support people like Helen, please consider donating to Samaritans. If you’re already giving to us, thank you so much  –  your support means we can be there to help the millions of people who contact us each year. @ Donate-Online

CHARLIE’S STORY

Former star of hit ITV2 show “The Only Way Is Essex” Charlie King, 28, from Essex, called Samaritans in 2011 when he was struggling with the demands of a highly stressful job, and the pressure he felt to behave in a certain way:

“I grew up with my mum and sisters, dad wasn’t around so I didn’t really have a male role model.

“I knew I wasn’t really like a typical boy. Rugby and football didn’t appeal to me, I was more interested in singing and dancing. I never really had a proper girlfriend, relationships didn’t seem to happen for me.

“My mum has a successful business, and from a young age I was thrust into a business world, I felt under pressure to do well and had to live up to high expectations.

“Before I had a chance to think about my career and what I really wanted to do, I was running the family restaurant.

Stressed, anxious and lonely

“I was working non-stop, and became obsessive about the restaurant – I had to be there all the time, wouldn’t share responsibilities with other staff, and started to believe the business wouldn’t survive if I wasn’t there every waking hour. I was highly stressed and struggled with anxiety.

“When I did take time off, I didn’t know what to do with myself. I felt I had no purpose, no one to share the fruits of my labour with – I was lonely. I’d end up blowing £100s on clothes, thinking it would make me feel better, but it didn’t.

“I started to get really depressed. I had no male friends, or a girlfriend. I remember walking my dog across a country park, and my head feeling like it was going to explode.

Reaching out for supportwww.samaritans.org

“I had reached the point where I felt I couldn’t go on, like there was no point in my existence. My family could see I was struggling, but they didn’t know what to do or say.

“This was when I first called Samaritans. Speaking to them really helped me to put my thoughts in order and gave me the reassurance I needed that everything would be ok. I called six or seven times in total.

“I also sought help through my GP, and joined a gym. Doing regular exercise gave me something to focus on, I felt and looked good.

“When I was halfway through a military fitness course, I broke my leg. It was the first time in my life where I was relying on other people, I needed help.

I wish I had realised it is ok to be different.

“All these events made me realise I needed to become more open and let people into my life. I wish I had realised it is ok to be different, that I didn’t have to conform to a certain stereotype of how a man should be.

“I also realised the importance of living your life. Work isn’t significant in the bigger picture of things.

“I wish I’d talked about my problems at a much earlier stage. I realise that if I had spoken to someone I probably wouldn’t have got to the point where I was considering suicide.

“If I hadn’t called Samaritans, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today. I have my life to thank them for.”

As a fan of @StaceySolomon and @loosewomen I am sad to hear Stacey is being #trolled again! However we have an exciting solution @DandiPatch #Entrepreneur @ESparkGlobal

The Sun Newspaper Reports @ www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/

nintchdbpict000362955359

STACEY Solomon has hit back at trolls who criticised her for bearing her dark armpit sweat patches during the latest episode of Loose Women.

Stacey said: “I’m a normal human who perspires!”

Mum to Mum UK says: “Well said Stacey!”

I absolutely love Stacey and the way she handles the ‘haters’, from body shaming to sweat patches she always handles it with laughter and dignity. I wonder how she feels on the inside though with these constant public ‘trolling’ incidents… On the flip side… I also love entrepreneurs and working with super cool people at Entrepreneurial Spark in Milton Keynes.

Even more exciting when you can link the two together…

Shameless PR you say, but sometimes it has to be done (so I am learning) because I love this product too!

Which leads me to Introduce… DANDI PATCH

21765686_861419054025885_2138925076999405973_o

DANDI PATCH – UNDERARM SWEAT PATCHES FOR MEN AND WOMEN

What is dandi® patch?

dandi® patch is a new, advanced type of sweat pad. It is here to revolutionise the way that we all treat sweat.

The dandi® patch is a thin, discreet underarm patch that adheres to the skin. It holds up to 2,000 times the average amount of underarm sweat, traps in armpit odour, prevents embarrassing sweat marks and stops horrible yellow staining.

It is also paraben free and contains no aluminium.

Keep up the good work Stacey as Mum to Mum MK love you! And Good Luck to Dandi Patch! I am certain you are going to have an AWESOME future!

Should I get my child vaccinated? #flu #vaccination

It’s flu vaccination season – and it’s currently offered free on the NHS for:

  • children aged two and three on August 31 2017 – that is, children born between September 1 2013 and August 31 2015
  • children in reception class and school years one, two, three and four
  • in some parts of the country, all primary school-aged children will be offered the vaccine (following a pilot in some areas)
  • children aged 2 to 17 with long-term health conditions

Read more @ www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/child-flu-vaccine

Vaccination is ALWAYS a controversial topic on  Mum to Mum social media groups; very often, the mums who respond to questions about immunisation have very strong opinions one way or the other – and sometimes, things can get heated. So, we’ve collected a range of opinions from a recent post about the flu vaccination, which we hope will help those looking for advice in the future. (If you are a member, you can also use the group search facility to see original debates on the topic.)

In favour:

“Absolutely worth it in my mind, any vaccination that is available to us against any disease is worth it in my opinion”

NHS-led-flu-campaign-with-supporting-partners

“My son has mild asthma and is 5 – he has had it the last 3 years and I honestly believe it helps. He hardly has colds now and he used to have them constantly! He has never had side effects from it”

“I’ve had it every year since being a child as I had severe asthma and the only time I got the flu was the one year I didn’t have it!”

“My son has it (due to age and is treated for asthma) but has the alternative due to egg allergy, and my 18 year old has it due to asthma. Lots of people say about it’s not worth it due to there being different strains of flu but as far as my son is concerned (lots of admissions especially due to his chest) I’d rather he have some protection

“Mine have it, if you have any concerns speak to a health professional before you agree so they can advise”

Against:

“I have heard this is a live virus they are giving the kids, anyone who has children that are prone to illness are you not worrying that they will get ill from this “vaccine”? Talking on another group about keeping kids off and for 2-3days there is shedding of virus and it actually causes illness. I will NOT be exposing my child to this test”

“Live vaccine, no thanks.”

“None of mine will be having it and never have.”

“I said no thanks. There’s not enough research into it in my opinion.”

“Mine don’t, never have.”

Unsure:

“My daughter had the nasal spray last year and was ill for two weeks after, could of been a coincidence. Not sure what I’m going to do this year yet. Haven’t heard if her school are doing it and not heard from the doctors either. She is 5 years old”

MK Scores: A Level and GCSE results

Results season has arrived again, with thousands of anxious teenagers finding out how they did in their A Level and GCSE exams in the summer term.

Pre_Public1

The MK Citizen has given us a round-up of news from across MK’s senior schools and colleges, with some very strong results coming in particular from the schools in the west – Denbigh, Hazeley and Shenley Brook End, and some big reasons to celebrate A Level success at Ousedale and Lord Grey School. Find out more from the links below:

MK Citizen reports on GCSE results

MK Citizen reports on A Level results

The Citizen has also written a useful explanation for this year’s changes to the GCSE system:

“Under the new system introduced for this summer’s exams, traditional A* to G grades have been replaced with a 9 to 1 system, with 9 the highest mark.

“Except…

“So far this system has only been introduced in England, with Wales and Northern Ireland also making changes to their GCSEs, but retaining the traditional grading scale. And the new marking system only applies to three subjects – maths, English language, and English literature. The other subjects will have the new system phased in over the next two years.
Grades 9, 8 and 7 are broadly equivalent to an A* and A; grades 6, 5 and 4 are in line with grades B to C; a 3 would be broadly similar to a D grade; and 2 and 1 cover grades E, F and G. There will still be a U (ungraded) mark.

“Many students are concerned about what is the equivalent of a C grade, which can be key for getting onto A Level courses. A grade 4 is being called a “standard pass” by Education Secretary Justine Greening. Grade 5 is defined as a “good pass”.

“It’s a good system, and so far the government has only spent £380,000 or so explaining it to schools, students and employers.”

What an amazing #Princess and how lovely are her sons #DianaOurMother #Inspirational #Charity #Motherhood #Loss #Proud

20 years #GoneButNotForgotten

Watching this documentary tonight has been so Inspirational in many ways…

In some parts it was like I was looking into a mirror but not as a princess and without the awful harassment from the paparazzi. I really do not know how she remained so calm and I feel sad for her and what she had to go through. She had to face the world on those dark days, she kept doing what she loved for others and she smothered her boys with love. She was not judged for giving so much time to charity and really was the queen of hearts.

I loved how the boys remembered how those cuddles felt and I will continue to do this to my boys…

How did she get through those dark days?

e980daf26e5f97a15e95cd431fe21b11  DFh3SpnWsAEHewk

Feeling unhappy within a marriage…

Her parents separated and then she had to make the very same heartbreaking decision…

Children moving from one parent to another…

Working with over 100 charities until the day after her divorce, when she announced her resignation from over 100 charities to spend more time with only six.

Over 100 charities! However did she do that? Just amazing and I can totally relate to why she gave so much.

Prioritising work and motherhood…

Romance after divorce and so much more!

o-DIVORCE-facebook

I will never forget that day in 1997 when I was a holiday rep in Ibiza, I was getting ready for my welcome meeting when my Spanish hotel owner said “no work today, your princess is dead!” Yes just like that!

We could not believe what he was saying until he put on the news and that is where we all sat for the rest of the day. I got fresh flowers for both of my hotels on the day of the funeral too and another hotel manager made me walk to the front of the TV screen and place the flowers there in front of over 300 guests.

It was a beautiful day outside and they were on holiday but there was only one place everyone wanted to be.

Most people can remember where they were that day…

The other Inspirational side is just how resilient Prince William and Prince Harry are.

Resilience: being able to bounce back from stress, challenge, tragedy, trauma or adversity. When children are resilient, they are braver, more curious, more adaptable, and more able to extend their reach into the world.

www.psychologytoday.com/the-resilient-child

Dealing with the separation of their parents…

Losing their mother at such a young age and continuing to brave the world...

Getting married and having children without one of your parents sharing this with you…

To see them come out the other side in this documentary gives those going through similar situations hope.

Hope that we can give them the love, strength and support they need to move forward in life. Show them how special it is to give and be kind always. To be an Inspiration to just one person if you can and reach out to them if you think you can help…

Fancy a day by the sea? MK to the seaside @MiltonKeynesMums

We have had a few posts this week asking about the closest beaches to MK.

Beaches by OneMK

OneMK posted this article back in May and we will add a few of our members suggestions, because we all love to be beside the seaside

Canvey Island: via M1 and London Orbital Motorway: 1hr 44mins

2302836_9eba1e83

TripAdvisor 2016: “Kids as usual love anything to do with beach. Unusually quiet considering it is August and school holidays. Great little beach, lots of coral and small crabs, water wasn’t very inviting for dipping. Perhaps a different section of the beach would have been better. Great small bars and restaurants local and a fun amusement Park for kids.”

Southend-on-Sea: via M1 and London Orbital Motorway: 1hr 44mins

Three Shells is a popular choice, particularly for families. Its central location places it at the heart of activity with Adventure Island, The Pier, High Street and numerous cafes, shops and amusements nearby. It has a fantastic play area for the kids, with shower, as well as easy access to the Three Shells cafe.

New for summer 2016 is the Three Shells Lagoon – a fantastic new attraction that will allow visitors to paddle and swim all day long, without worrying about the tides.”

All hallow: via M1 and London Orbital Motorway: 1hr 52mins

allhallows

Allhallows beach, on the Thames estuary, is possibly the closest ‘proper’ beach to London. Along with having a good section of sandy beach makes this a popular spot with families

“Spent a glorious day today at the beach. We were near the paddling pool (it does need a good clean out from the rocks and seaweed) but with the tide out, we walked out on the mud. There is a grass area above beach with a small climbing frame which the children loved. Toilets are available with a portable kiosk.”

Minster on Sea: via M1 and London Orbital Motorway: 1hr 50mins

“Lucky to be local to here. Lovely prom; very clean; blue flag beach; ideal for all. Dogs are only allowed in a certain part but they have plenty of room to run and swim and families can relax knowing there are no unpleasant surprises. Sun rises and Sunday sets are just spectacular.”

Clacton on Sea: via London Orbital Motorway and A12: 1hr 50mins

“We had a great time at Clacton & will be heading back. It was a lovely place to have a day away with my family & my son LOVED all the arcades! Make sure to check out El Guaca Mexican Restaurant & if you need somewhere to stay, Premier Inn is amazing!”

SHEERNESS BEACH is a ‘Blue Flag’ award winning (2016) bathing beach located centrally in the town of Sheerness on the north coast of the Isle of Sheppey. This predominantly shingle beach is characterised by a steep high sea wall with flood gates and ramps/steps at regular intervals. Steps lead down from the flat, wide seaward promenade to the pebble beach. The seawall is bordered by a wide expanse of green open space which leads to the promenade – making it an ideal spot for a picnic. Popular amongst families, it offers plenty of attractions for a great day out.

The RNLI are providing the beach lifeguard service on this beach on behalf of Swale Borough Council.

Hunstanton has been recommended by Mum to Mum members.

www.visitwestnorfolk.com

“The elegant resort of Hunstanton is the ideal base to enjoy Norfolk’s superb coastline. Hunstanton, or ‘Hunston’ as it is known locally, is renowned for its unique striped cliffs and magnificent sunsets, made special by its position as the only west-facing resort on the East coast.

The seaside town began as a purposely-built resort in 1846 and retains its Victorian charm and character to this day, remaining a popular holiday destination for visitors of all ages. From buzzing family activities such as Crazy Golf, Pitch-and-Putt, and the Oasis Leisure Centre to the tranquil Esplanade Gardens there is something for everyone. The town’s array of gardens are especially delightful during the Spring and summer months, and you can follow a self-guided Horticultural Trail to make sure you experience them all.

Hunstanton’s excellent beach offers ideal conditions for playing on the sand, exploring rock pools, and enjoying the sea.”

Mersea Island

There’s a distinct sense of adventure about a trip to Mersea Island. Approached by a causeway from the mainland, cut off at high spring tide, and just eight miles square, it’s a place you have to plan to get to. It’s also a place with two quite different faces. Most visitors head straight for West Mersea, firmly oyster territory and the island’s undisputed capital, with its shops, guesthouses and restaurants. Pleasures here are simple: relaxing on the beach, crabbing from the jetties, watching the activity at the boat-repair yards, taking in the dramatic, wide skies and estuary views, and, of course, feasting on fresh native oysters.
For further information about this wonderful Island go to: www.visitmerseaisland.co.uk

Holywell Retreat

Holywell Retreat is set at the foot of the South Downs, this quant little enclave boasts a popular café, beach huts and beach chalets. The Dotto land stops here. This section of coastline provides rock pools full of marine life at low tide, pretty Italian gardens and the dramatic chalk cliffs of Beachy Head.

Dogs are welcome on these beaches but must be kept under control.
